Malaysian school integrates 11 campuses with CRM app

        To integrate campus student information systems at 11 separate campuses, and to centralize the management of the marketing and recruitment process, Malaysia's INTI Education Group has adopted an open-source based customer relationship management (CRM) application.

“We also believe that open source prevents vendor lock in. We chose
Red Hat because it is based on open standards, which translates to lower
costs and greater flexibility.”

Adopting a customer relationship management (CRM) solution proved to be a
logical choice and INTI picked SugarCRM from iZENO, a Red Hat Infocomm
Local Industry Upgrading Programme (iLIUP) Partner. The open-source
based CRM solution was chosen for its flexibility and
cost-effectiveness.

FOSS.my 2008 is Over!

Holas FOSSers!

It sure has been a while hasn't it? Just two weekends ago, we ran the inaugural FOSS.my conference! Boy it was really Awesome!

This conference was made possible by the kind sponsorships by APIIT, Microsoft, Mixi, Mozilla, Novell, ByteCraft, and Inigo.

What kind of conference would it be without awesome speakers? Do give them a hand!

Do give the organizing team a big thanks. This also goes out to the volunteers who helped during the day, FOSS.my wouldn't have been a
success without you!

How should you thank em? well perhaps email, identi.ca, twiter, leave some grafitti on their wall, or even poke em!

Don't forget to thank yourselves for making this possible. That's right, give yourself a pat on the back, without your support, the energy in the environment wouldn't have been the same.

There was such a great response from the community, that we were largely unprepared for the numbers!

If you were one of the unlucky ones unable to attend the event, do have a look at our gallery . Don't worry, slides and video are going up as soon as possible, so you will hear from me again.

If you happened to take photos, and uploaded them to Flickr, do tag them with "foss.my" and "foss.my 2008", and it'll instantly join the
collection!

I would like to thank you for your patience during the event, as not only was this the first conference I've ever run, but also I was unprepared for the enthusiastic response.

It would be appreciative if you could fill in the feedback form so that we can improve on this fantastic conference, and come back with an even more awesome conference!

So you are probably asking yourself, "what next?"

You've all been asking for it, and they're back. That's right, the MyOSS Meetups! On Thursday, 4th December 2008, FOSS.my delegate
Mohanaraj will be speaking on "Securing your Web API with oAuth".

Want to help the meetups? Have something to talk about? Wanted to present at FOSS.my, but was unable to? Don't worry, just fill out
this form and we'll get back to you!

I have also create a FOSS.my facebook group for upcoming FOSS Malaysia related events

Till next year, see you at FOSS.my 2009.

Hope to see you sooner at a MyOSS Meetup.

Regards,
Ezwan Aizat Bin Abdullah Faiz,
FOSS.my Committee Member

        The Malaysian government announced plans to adopt open standards and the Open Document Format (ODF) within the country's public sector.

"These discussions centered on open formats, particularly as they
relate to office documents, their importance for the current and future
accessibility of government records, and the relative 'openness' of the
format options available to us," Nor Aliah explained.

The Malaysian Administration Modernization and Management Planning
Unit (MAMPU) last week issued a tender for a nine-month study to
evaluate the usage of open standards in its information communications
technology (ICT) deployment. The study will also look into how the
Malaysian public sector should migrate to open standards and the ODF,
according to the Malaysia Open Source Software Alliance (MOSSA).

Sudah ada standard ISO26300 iaitu Open Document Format (ODF): kewujudan dua standard menambah kos, ketidakpastian dan kekeliruan di kalangan industri, kerajaan dan rakyat;

Belum ada sebarang pelaksanaan terbukti bagi spesifikasi OOXML: Microsoft Office 2007 menghasilkan versi OOXML tersendiri, bukannya sebuah format fail yang menepati spesifikasi OOXML;

Tiada maklumat di dalam dokumen spesifikasi; contohnya bagaimana hendak melakukan autoSpaceLikeWord95 atau useWord97LineBreakRules;

Lebih daripada 10% contoh-contoh yang dinyatakan di dalam standard yang dicadangkan tidak sah sebagai XML;

Tiada jaminan yang sesiapapun dapat membangunkan perisian yang melaksanakan spesifikasi OOXML, sama ada sepenuhnya atau sebahgian daripadanya, tidak akan dikenakan ganti rugi paten atau yuran untuk lesen paten daripada Microsoft;

Cadangan standard ini bercanggah dengan standard ISO yang lain,
seperti ISO 8601 (Representation of dates and times), ISO 639 (Codes
for the Representation of Names and Languages) atau ISO/IEC 10118-3
(cryptographic hash);

        Sign the petition to say "NO" to OOXML as an ISO Standard

You can sign the petition here http://www.noooxml.org/

I ask the national members of ISO to vote "NO" in the ballot of ISO
DIS 29500 (Office OpenXML or OOXML format) for the following reasons:

There is already a standard ISO26300 named Open Document Format (ODF): a dual standard adds costs, uncertainty and confusion to industry, government and citizens;

There is no provable implementation of the OOXML specification: Microsoft Office 2007 produces a special version of OOXML, not a file format which complies with the OOXML specification;

There is missing information from the specification document, for example how to do a autoSpaceLikeWord95 or useWord97LineBreakRules;

More than 10% of the examples mentioned in the proposed standard do not validate as XML;

There is no guarantee that anybody can write a software that fully or partially implements the OOXML specification without being liable to patent damages or patent license fees by Microsoft;

This standard proposal conflicts with other ISO standards,
such as ISO 8601 (Representation of dates and times), ISO 639 (Codes
for the Representation of Names and Languages) or ISO/IEC 10118-3
(cryptographic hash);

There is a bug in the spreadsheet file format which forbids to enter any date before the year 1900: such bugs affects the OOXML specification as well as software versions such as Microsoft Excel 2000, XP, 2003 or 2007.

This standard proposal has not been created by bringing together the experience and expertise of all interested parties (such as the producers, sellers, buyers, users and regulators), but by Microsoft alone.

Malaysian NGOs Launch FTA Campaign Website

        On March 8, Malaysia and US officially launched a bilateral free trade agreement (FTA) and negotiations on the agreement will be intense in the months ahead as the US is pressing to complete the pact by the end of the year, to take advantage of the US President’s ‘fast track authority’ that ends in mid-2007.

Given the lack of information and public consultation in the on-going talks and the strong likelihood of an imbalanced outcome in the US-Malaysia FTA negotiations, a coalition of Malaysian NGOs held a forum on 25 March to launch a campaign calling upon the government to put on hold the negotiations until a comprehensive Cost-Benefit assessment is done.

For more information about this initiative, please refer to a new website – www.ftamalaysia.org – which has been set up to help disseminate information and raise public awareness on the Malaysia-US FTA, as well as other FTAs with which Malaysia is involved.

        The first ever sister site for FOSSFM opens.

Press Inquiries:
Aizat Faiz

Phone: xxx

Email: aizat.faiz@gmail.com

(Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia -- April 2nd, 2006) Student efforts at
University Putra Malaysia have begun, and their FOSS club has opened up
a site http://upm.foss.org.my.

"The creation of this FOSS clubs, shows that there is an active interest by students in learning more about Free and Open Source Software. The open and collaborative nature of FOSS provides additional avenues for aquiring and sharing knowledge for students, which were previously denied to them due to the restrictions and costs of proprietary software", said Master Yoda, the current chairman of FOSSFM.

"By using FOSS, I had acesss to the source code and technical help from the worldwide FOSS technical community", said codept, a student of UPM. The excited student also added, "I could use all the features of an advanced database such as PostgreSQL for my project, which I could use freely on my own PC. Several senior local and international developers shared with me advanced ideas when on my project!".

The UPM FOSS club hopes to help facilitate more support to students through by holding regular meetins and inviting leading local developers to present and mentor them for projects throught the support of FOSSFM. Already over 100 students have joined the new club. Not only are the students learning new skills on software that are current market leaders in technology and innovation, but the FOSS software skills increase their marketability and chances of emploment upon graduation.

"FOSS allow students to reuse their skills without the added costs of acquring expensive proprietary software. This only increases their value to employers, furthermore the collaborative and open nature of FOSS and their involvement in FOSS communities advertises their skills to employers who are also using the same software", said Khairil Yusof a developer at a local FOSS company. He further added involvement in FOSS, allows students to better understand concepts that prepare them to use a variety of tools.

"The ability to understand the basic concepts and use of multiple software tools are the skills that employers are looking for."

Local proprietary software representatives declined to comment. A chair however was thrown through the window of the companies and foul expletives were heard regarding how they will kill FOSS.

FOSSFM stated that plans are currently in place to support 10 more universities and students throughout Malaysia.

About Free and Open Source Software
Free

the freedom to run the software for any purpose, to study and modify
the software and to redistribute and share copies of either the
